Benin suspends palace activities over monarch’s health

After several weeks of public speculation about the health condition of the Oba of Benin, the Benin Traditional Council announced yesterday that “Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Erediauwa, Oba of Benin is indisposed.”

A statement signed by Secretary of the council, Frank Irabor, said: “Public engagements, including courtesy visits, hearing of complaints from individuals, families and communities, and in particular, complaints over inheritance and land disputes, are therefore suspended until further notice.”

Irabor, however, explained that the routine traditional duties of the palace chiefs would continue.
