For attempting to vote for their preferred candidates during the presidential elections, some supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 6 in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State nearly lost their lives.
As they waited for accreditation on that fateful Saturday, thugs armed with assorted weapons stormed the polling unit and attacked the APC supporters believed to be from the northern part of the country where the APC presidential candidate hails from.
They were dealt machete cuts and had to run to save their lives.
Sunday Sun’s attempt to speak with the victims yielded no fruit as they were still scared to narrate their ordeal.
A leader of the community in Port Harcourt Old Town who spoke on the condition of anonymity said they took solace in the fact that their candidate eventually emerged victorious in the election.
He expressed hope that measures would be put in place before the governorship and state assembly polls to curtail killing and maiming of innocent Nigerians by those who want their candidates to win at all costs.
