The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Dr. Davies Ikanya, on Monday night escaped what he described as an assassination by the whiskers.A group of unknown gunmen reportedly stormed his residence on Herbert Macaulay Street, Amadi Flat in Old GRA, Port Harcourt.
But for the quick response of security operatives, who were on guard, the hoodlums would have gained entrance into the residence of the state APC chairman.
The incident, which occurred at about 8.40pm, was said to have taken everybody by surprise as the gunmen opened fire at the security operatives guarding Ikanya’s house.
The security men were said to have fired back at the bandits, who ostensibly had come to assassinate the party chairman or kidnap him for a ransom.
However, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, confirmed the incident, but said he had yet to get the details of the attack.
Ikanya did not respond to several calls to his mobile phone as our correspondent tried to get him to narrate his ordeal.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Tele Ikuru, has dismissed an allegation that he ordered the kidnapping and assassination of his former Press Secretary, Mr. Godswill Jumbo.
The deputy governor, in a statement by his Acting Press Secretary, Ednah Alete, described the allegation as baseless and an assault on the his (Ikuru) person.
The statement read, “Responding to the allegations raised by an erstwhile casual worker of his Excellency may not have been an option, except that the accusations are baseless and an assault directed on the office and person of the deputy governor.
“In keeping the records straight, let it be to your notice that Mr. Godswill Jumbo was a casual employee, who was graciously engaged by the deputy governor and saved from joblessness. The Deputy Governor denies allegations of attempted abduction and assassination levelled against him by Mr. Godswill Jumbo.
“It is unfounded, untrue, misleading and considered as an attempt to malign his character and image through the media and call on law enforcement agencies to unravel the truth behind Mr. Jumbo’s tantrums.”
