Those who think that the circle of instability which the people of Rivers state have experienced in the last three years are over with the coming in of the administration of Chief Bar. Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike maybe in for a shocker, as another round of confrontation with the federal government is already brewing.
The Special Adviser to the Rivers State Governor on Media and Publicity, Sir Opunabo Christian Inko-Tariah in a recent press release entitled “Buhari Government on a Witch Hunt Mission” gave an open threat to the government of President Muhammadu Buhari because of the anti corruption policies of the new central government which he says is a witch hunt.
Governor Wike’s spokesman, while publicly declaring the readiness of the Rivers state government to “resist” President Buhari, also described the action of the Department of State Security in the arrest and investigation of Gesila Khan as “illegal” and “insidious”.
You will recall that Rivers state had been plagued with crisis arising from disagreements between the immediate past state governor and Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan during the second tenure of the former. The clash between former president Goodluck Jonathan and Rt Hon Amaechi which did not only deprive the state of federal projects but also resulted in the outflow of investors from the state as a result of increased insecurity was said to have been fanned by a third force allegedly led by Chief Wike the present governor of the state and several other persons that have been accused of having made political and pecuniary gains from the conflict.
