Police arraign six over Indian hemp possession, smoking

The Police on Thursday brought six men before an Ota Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ogun State, over alleged possession and smoking of Indian hemp.

The accused are Omoyosi Kamoro, 45; Samuel Okorafor, 38; Azeez Shola, 50; Babalola Akeem, 28; Bright Anthony, 36; and Ado Musa, 40.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Ebibomino Itaita, told the court that the accused and others still at large committed the offences on October 14, at about 11pm., at Ojuelegba Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun.

Itaita said the accused, of no fixed addresses, were found smoking weed suspected to be Indian hemp in the public.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 249(d) and 250(4) of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Law of Ogun State, 2006.

The accused, however, all pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Funke Odubanjo, granted the accused persons N500,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Odubanjo said that one of the sureties must be a close relation of the accused, produce one year tax clearance and swear to an affidavit of means.

She also said that the addresses of the sureties should be verified by the police and adjourned the case till December 21 for hearing.
