The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, directed the 23 local government areas in the state to procure 46 security utility vehicles for security agencies in their communities.
Wike, who gave this directive while receiving the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta, at the Government House in Port Harcourt, said the measure was targeted at strengthening the capacity of the police and other security agencies to fight crime in the state.
He explained that his administration also decided at the last Security Council meeting in the state that additional logistics would be provided for security agencies in Rivers.
Wike further declared that all the local government chairmen had been given specific directives to mobilise community support for the police and other security agencies in the state to further reduce crime.
The governor added that all the local government chairmen had been given directives to mobilise community support for the police and other security agencies in a bid to further reduce crime in the state.

Wike maintained that any person arrested for kidnapping, cultism and armed robbery must be prosecuted, even as he disclosed that he had instructed the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Kimo, not to release any suspect based on his relationship with any government official.
“Anybody arrested in respect of kidnapping, cultism and armed robbery must be prosecuted. I have directed the Commissioner of Police never to release any suspect on the strength of his relationship with any government official or any prominent citizen of the state.
“On no account should the police release the suspects of kidnapping, cultism and armed robbery without proper investigation and prosecution. I have directed the state Attorney-General to ensure that all legal loopholes during prosecution are checked to ensure that suspected criminals are discouraged,” he added.
Bolanta had lauded Wike’s efforts in mobilising support in the local government areas for the police to fight crime.

The AIG also thanked the governor for his support for the police through the provision of logistics and other investments.
He described security as an expensive venture and promised that the police would continue to seek more support from the state government.
The AIG, who said he was in Rivers State for a familiarisation visit, noted that a helicopter had been devoted to Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Cross River states.
Wike had earlier donated 64 Sports Utility Vehicles to police and other security agencies in the state to fight crime.
