Ugwuanyi appoints ex-General to tackle herdsmen

The Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Tuesday moved to address the menace posed by herdsmen in the state by setting up a Security Committee.

Over 20 persons died when herdsmen invaded Ukpabi Nimbo, an Enugu community, on April 25.

A Catholic seminarian and a housewife died in an attack by herdsmen in Attakwu, another community in the state, on August 25.

A statement released on Tuesday evening by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Louis Amoke, said the Security Committee would be headed by Brigadier-General Fred Eze (retd.).

The committee also comprises members of the Enugu State Executive Council, members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, representatives of the security agencies and local government councils chairmen.

Also in the committee are representatives of the Fulan, Shuwa Arab and Hausa communities in Enugu State, representatives of cattle market traders, traditional rulers, leaders  of towns’ unions, representatives of Neighbourhood Watch Associations, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Enugu State chapter, and Students Union leaders in the state.
