The whereabouts of 14 oil workers of a Port Harcourt-based company, Nestoil, kidnapped by gunmen in River State remain unknown a week after their abduction.
The police have not been able to trace the location of the oil workers eight days after they were whisked away in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.
Though the police have continued to comb bushes in the area in order to rescue the victims, they have been unable to locate them.
The oil workers, who were in their company’s Toyota Coaster bus, were stopped by their captors along Omoku-Elele Road as they were returning to Port Harcourt.
Sources disclosed that the hoodlums commanded the driver to drive the vehicle to an unidentified place, where the occupants were ordered into a nearby bush. The kidnappers had demanded N100m ransom.
A resident in Omoku told our correspondent that some members of a vigilance group were also assisting security operatives to find the victims.
The resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Security operatives and members of a vigilance group have been searching for the oil workers since September 2 when they were kidnapped. Sadly, none of them has been rescued.’’
When contacted on Saturday, the Spokesperson for the Rivers Police Command, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, explained that the police would soon make headway.
He, however, added that it would not be right to divulge information on the matter in order not to frustrate the efforts being made by the police to rescue the victims.
“We are making headway, but we cannot talk on security issues like this for now. All I can tell you is that we are working towards rescuing the oil workers,” Omini said.
