Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Mobolaji Odesanya has said the command is making progress in its investigation into the murder of renowned human rights lawyer, Ken Atsuwete.
Atsuwete, who was one of the counsels to the detained chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, was murdered on August 28, 2016, near his residence at Aluu community in Ikwerre local government area of the state.
Odesanya, who spoke to newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday shortly before leading various units of the command on a ‘Show of Force’ round the Rivers State capital, said several arrests have been made in connection to the murder of the activist.“We have made a lot of progress on the killing of Ken Atsuwete, which I will not like to divulge for security reasons, but we have made progress, Arrests have been made.” he said
The Commissioner of police also disclosed that efforts were on to rescue 14 oil workers who were kidnapped by yet-to-be identified gunmen on September 2, along the Elele-Omoku Road in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of the state.
“About the kidnapped 14 oil workers,we are on it. We are combing the forests and we have made contacts. Very soon, they will be rescued.” he said
He stated that the Show of Force, which involved men and officer of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), Explosives Ordinance Department (EOD),Anti-kidnapping Unit and Anti-Cultism Unit, was to reassure the people of the state of the readiness of the command to protect lives and property during and after the Sallah celebrations.
The Police Commissioner added that, “The show of force is to reassure the good people of Rivers State that the police is ready to provide adequate security at the praying grounds, recreational facilities, parks, malls and the eateries.
“It is also a response unit; if there is an incident anywhere, the men will move. Port Harcourt has been sectionalised into three. Each section will be headed by an officer and will setup motorised patrol in those areas. Same thing is been replicated in Ahoada district as well as in Bori district.
“Apart from these, our men are already at respective praying grounds in order to ensure that our Muslim brothers have a crime free Sallah celebration.
We have the PMF, we have Explosives Ordinance Department, we have C4i. Other tactical units are also involved. Anti-kidnapping Unit and Anti-Cultism Unit.”
