The leader of Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC), Dr. Frederick Fasheun has said that personnel of the Nigeria Police Force are poorly motivated and overstretched in the discharge of their duties.
He said aside the fact that they are poorly trained, they also kill Nigerians extra-judicially and lack effectiveness in handling arms and ammunition in their quest to promote peace and security.
He spoke yesterday as the Chairman Governing Council of APUDI Institute for Peace Studies and Social Rehabilitation (APIS) at the inauguration of APIS-University of Abuja Study Centre and matriculation ceremony in Abuja.
The OPC leader noted that the Nigeria Police are poorly motivated even with the population of over 10,000 citizens to one police officer, yet Nigerians expect the Police to perform magic in installing peace in the country.
Fasheun averred that peace is an essential ingredient for growth across all sectors of society.
The President/CEO of APIS and former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Almustapha (rtd), said the institute was conceived with the goal of sustaining peace in the country. He said the courses offered by APIS are not such that are available in Nigeria universities, thus the institute was set up to bridge the gap.
Speaking at the occasion, the Vice Chancellor of University of Abuja, Prof. Michael Adikwu said the affiliation of APIS to the varsity was timely due to the uniqueness of the former’s academic programme.
