The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on oil giants, Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, to as a matter of urgency sign a Global Memorandum of Understanding, (GMoU) between it and the people of Oyigbo community in Oyigbo local government area of the state.
This was contained in the report of the House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions, submitted by its Chairman, Hon. Evans Bipi at the House resumed sitting, yesterday.
The Oyigbo Youth Council, had on July 27, this year petitioned the state Assembly over noninclusion of the youths in planned 220 employment chances by General Electrics for ‘C’ Inspection Project of Afam VI Power Plant, awarded by the SPDC.
Presenting the report, Bipi stated that from the committee findings, there is no functional GMoU between SPDC/ASTORM/GENERAL ELECTRICS and the people of Oyigbo. He said the committee further found that even in the expired GMoU, the OYC was not properly represented. The committee also found that the project was to last for only three months and therefore cannot be used as basis for employment by the companies.
“That SPDC should as a matter of urgency conclude the signing of the new Global Memorandum of Understanding with the people of Oyigbo and take cognisance of the youths of Oyigbo.
