The Enugu State Police Command on Sunday said it has commenced a massive crackdown for suspected killers of its officer clubbed to death on Saturday at the popular New Artisan Market within Enugu metropolis.
The incident followed the officer’s attempt to apprehend alleged tricycle driver.
The tricycle operators around the New Artisan Market at the time of the incident were allegedly said to be predominantly Hausa men who resisted the officer from arresting one of their colleagues before disposing him of his gun, a source who claimed to be close to the scene of the incident at the time but preferred to be anonymous hinted Daily Times that the police officer died as a result of the hard object used on him.
The New Artisan Market area has been a hot bed for hoodlums, who operate mostly at night. However, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration had upon assumption of power made effort to sanitize the area.
Spokesman of the Enugu State Police Command, SP Ebere Amaraizu, while reacting to the incident said that the police had begun massive crackdown and investigation into the matter.
“We are saddened with the development that we lost one of our own in the line of duty. “It is unfortunate that at this age, people still engage in maiming law enforcement officers meant to protect and ensure they live peacefully in their neighbourhoods.
“We have launched investigation into the matter. “The command would unravel what happened and deal with the culprits decisively,’’ he said.
