Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mamud Yakubu has vowed to expose Theand prosecute staff of the Commission involved in the 23 billion naira Rivers election bribery scam.
Yakubu was speaking in Lagos at the beginning of a week-long retreat for INEC Commissioners.
Political correspondent, Ayodele Ozugbakun who was there reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission is still smarting from the violence and irregularities that marred the re-run election in Rivers State last December.
The election left a negative impression in the minds of observers. Before the Rivers debacle the Commission was still contending with issues that cropped up during and after most elections that took place after the 2015 general election.
To plan ahead of the 2019 general election, the chairman of the Commission and his commissioners across the 36 states are gathered in Lagos for this retreat to improve the performance of the Commission.
Not done with the violence that marred the Rivers legislative election, Professor Abubakar Momoh, Director National Electoral Institute stated that electoral offenders will henceforth be prosecuted and perpetrators of violence will be made to face the full weight of the law.
Professor Mamoud said that 120 electoral offenders are presently being prosecuted by INEC.
The Independent National Electoral Commission led by Professor Yakub Mamoud might be under pressure to surpass the achievements recorded by his predecessor, Professor Atahiru Jega.
