Operatives of the Anti-kidnapping section of the Abia State Intelligence Department in Umuahia have arrested four notorious gangsters for allegedly raping and terrorising market women at Elughu Nkporo in Ohafia area and its environs.
The suspects are Ifeagwu Kalu, known as Eskimo, 34; Nkeiru John Iwuoha, known as Damage, 40; Chukwu Ogbonnaya, 26; and Onyebuchi Kalu, 24.
It was learnt that the suspects had forcefully had sex with some women and some National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) ladies serving in the area.
According to Southern City, some of the rape victims had reported their ordeal in the hands of the suspects to the State CID in Umuahia, while the hoodlums were arrested by the operatives following a tip-off from members of the public.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Adeleye Oyebade, confirmed the arrest of the suspects.
CP Oyebade said the women of the affected community had closed their shops some weeks back to protest against the ugly attack and rape in the area by the suspect.
He said, “Some of the raped victims has identified the suspects in custody and the suspects have also confessed to the crime and would soon be charged to court.”
