The spate of brutality of civilians by uniformed men seem not to be abating as a Lance Corporal was alleged to have brutalised a man in the Oshodi area of Lagos State, while a naval rating was held for beating up a security guard at a fast food restaurant in the state.
The two incidents, captured in a snapshot and video respectively, have gone viral on the social media, with many Nigerians calling for the identification and punishment of the culprits.
In the Oshodi incident, which was shared by a popular comedian, Ali Baba, a solider could be seen standing on a resident in the mud, with a whip in his hand.
Although the time and cause of the incident could not be ascertained, the background showed the incident happened beside a rail track in front of the Nigerian Army Shopping Arena, Oshodi.
“Bloody civilian! How dare you challenge an officer? And after investigation, it would be an #unknownSoldier. Bloody civilian,” Ali Baba wrote in his Instagram post.
In the naval incident, the rating was said to have brutalised the security guard who was working with Tasty Fried Chicken.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the rating had parked his car wrongly and when he was asked to park right, he became infuriated and assaulted the victim.
The security guard could be seen lying on the floor as a mob formed around the naval rating, who made frantic efforts to make a call to “my office.”
The video, which was uploaded on Facebook on May 11 by one Zuwairat Asekome, also showed two cops, who had been invited by residents to arrest the rating, struggling with him.
Asekome, who narrated the incident, said, “It will interest you to know that this guy (security man) didn’t hit the rating back. What really irked me was that the rating focused his blows on the boy’s mouth, despite blood sputtering out, he refused to stop.
“I was just about to get into my car, when I saw blood everywhere. At first, I thought he had injured the rating; then I took a closer look and saw it was the TFC security man that was bleeding.
“Of course we refused to let the rating go away until we called the police and they showed up. He was rude to an officer way higher in rank. In my opinion, the policewoman was actually trying to save him from being lynched because the crowd tried to force him to take the boy to a hospital to treat him.”
The military authorities have yet to react to the two incidents as of press time.
