Deputy Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Sunday Peter, has been impeached.
The motion for his impeachment was moved by Muhammed Hayatu Atiku, member representing Uba Gaya in the Assembly, while it was endorsed by 17 members of the House, according to information office of the Assembly.
The impeachment of Hon. Peter was followed by a motion for the dissolution of the leadership of APC in the House leading to election of Hon. Hassan Barguma as the Majority leader, Hon Abubakar Isa, representing Shelleng constituency, as the Deputy Majority leader and Adamu Usman as the Chief Whip.
The House also moved for the replacement of the minority leadership of the House, with Lusambani Dilli becoming the Minority Leader and Justina Nkom becoming the Minority Whip.
Details as to the reasons for the sweeping changes in the House remained sketchy as staff and officials kept sealed lips over the matter.
The state Assembly had been on recess since August 9 and only resumed, on Monday, to introduce the sweeping changes.
The embattled deputy speaker was conspicuously absent at the Speakers conference of the 36 states of the federation held in Yola, at the weekend, and was absent at Monday’s sitting when he was impeached.
It was, however, clear that all was not well in the Adamawa State House of Assembly dominated by APC as the changes could be a signal for an impending battle within the APC leading to 2019 elections.
