Students of Abia State Polytechnic (Abiapoly) led by the students union President, Comrade George Nwankwo, this morning chased away Abia State NLC Chairman, Comrade Uchenna Obigwe, and some local workers union leaders from their school gate and forcefully reopened the gate for staff and students to enter.
The NLC Chairman who led a team state NLC executives to picket the school on Monday in protest over the disengagement of 258 workers of the institution, returned to the school today (Wednesday) to meet angry students who asked them to leave the school gate open for students and workers who are willing to work to enter. When the NLC leaders attempted to block the road leading to the school with their bus the war songs chanting students advanced towards them and the hoodlums who came with the NLC officials and they fled the scene.
It will be recalled that the student union government of the school released a statement yesterday asking the NLC chairman to leave the management of the school alone to restructure the institution for better performance. Part of the statement reads:
PRESS RELEASE- 30/9/19
Our attention has been drawn to media publication suggesting that students of Abia State Polytechnic (Abiapoly) Aba participated in a demonstration on Monday 30th September, 2019, against the management of our great institution with regards the ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning our school for greater exploits.
We wish to state unequivocally that Abiapoly students were not involved in any protest but rather the organizers, led by Abia State Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman, Comrade Uchenna Obigwe, brought hoodlums to our school to lock up the gate and harass innocent passers by.
As a student body, we have no business with NLC or the local inions and frown at the attempt to involve us in a matter we consider purely administrative. Furthermore, we believe that anything that will lead to closure of our school at this time will hurt us as students as well as our parents who carry the burden of paying school fees for more years than planed originally
We therefore wish to warn the leadership of NLC in the state and the local unions to stay clear of our school along with their hired hoodlums as we will not keep quiet and watch outsiders lock up our school again.
Aluta Continua, Vicrory Ascerta!!!!
Signed;
Comrade Nwankwo George
Executive President, SUG
