Abia State Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu PhD, has stressed the need for deligent and effective immunization to be carried out in the State and across the nation to ensure that Nigeria is certified Polio free by the World Health Organization before the end of the year.
Sir Ude Oko Chukwu who stated this during a meeting with the State Taskforce on Immunization in preparation for the National Immunization Plus Days coming up from this Saturday at the Government House, Umuahia, noted that the state and nation have not recorded any incident of the wild polio virus over the years and will be delisted from the three polio endemic countries by WHO if no case of polio is recorded in any part of the nation by June this year.
The Deputy Governor who is also the Chairman of the State Taskforce On Immunization noted that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu will continue to do everything possible to ensure that no case of polio is recorded in the State through prompt payment of the counterpart fund, mobilizing health workers to effectively carry out the immunization and ensuring that every Abia child is immunized not only against polio but every child killer disease.
Sir Oko Chukwu used the meeting to thank the combined efforts of the State Government, Health Workers, Donor Agencies, Development Partners, and Non Governmental Organizations for being in the vanguard of the fight to ensure that Nigeria is no longer an endemic country and warned against any action that could derail the journey of the nation being declared polio free by WHO.
He further urged parents, caregivers, traditional rulers and all stakeholders to ensure that every Abia child is immunized and assured that Abia is peaceful and safe.
In his speech, the Executive Secretary, Abia State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr Chinagozi Adindu, said that they are working assiduously to ensure that the immunization exercise is carried out effectively and called on Government to pay the counterpart fund, pointing out that the Agency has procured solar powered refrigerators to preserve vaccines while the national immunization will be flagged off at Nkporo in Ohafia LGA this Saturday.
Similarly, the State representative of WHO, Dr L.E. Okoro, Rtn Akanmnonu Azubike, Dr Robinson Nnaji and Eze G.C. Onwuka, assured that they will continue being committed in the task of eradicating polio and all child killer diseases in the State and nation at large. They lauded Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for his health friendly policies.
The meeting attracted the presence of members of the State Executive Council, LGA TC Chairmen, traditional rulers, health workers, donor agencies, development partners, NGOS and stakeholders in the health industry.
