There was tension in Lagos on Monday night following the deployment of soldiers to disperse #EndSARS protesters at Lekki Toll Plaza in the state.
Several protesters were allegedly feared dead as gunshots were heard with the soldiers shooting sporadically into the air in a bid to disperse the protesters.
Daily Trust reports that the deployment of soldiers followed the imposition of 24-hour curfew by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The protesters have taken over the Toll Plaza for almost a week protesting against police brutality and calling for the dissolution of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police.
A former presidential candidate, Pat Utomi, who witnessed the shooting said it started around 7 p.m.
He cautioned the government to be circumspect against making a rash decision.
“I was talking to somebody in the US when I heard siren and suddenly I started hearing gunshots. I was hearing them saying “kneel down, they are shooting at us,” he said in an interview monitored on Channels TV.
“Authorities dealing with this matter need to be very careful,” Utomi added.
Other protesters who took to social media to narrate their experience said armed soldiers shot at them after they took out the cameras and switched off the lights.
