ECOWAS Heads of States convened in Abuja to address the military junta in Niger Republic. Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, held talks with coup leaders in Niamey, coinciding with the launch of an anti-coup movement by Niger’s former rebel leader. The French government refuted claims from Niger’s new military rulers, while the SMBLF opposed military action to remove the illegal government. The NSCIA advised ECOWAS against sanctions, favoring dialogue.

Sanusi, a former CBN governor, engaged with military leaders after a canceled meeting with AU, ECOWAS, and US diplomats. He visited in a personal capacity, aiming to facilitate negotiations, with President Bola Tinubu’s awareness. Footage of Sanusi in Niger circulated, where he met junta leaders alongside the Sultan of Damagaran to establish dialogue.

Following his return, Sanusi briefed President Tinubu, emphasizing public involvement for an Africa-centered solution. Sanusi clarified he initiated the visit independently, leveraging personal connections, to contribute to a resolution beneficial to Africa, Niger, Nigeria, and humanity.
