A member representing Awka South 1 constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Henry Mbachu has decried the level of poverty in Nigeria.

The legislator, who visited a few marketplaces in his constituency, stated that it is obvious that if the current rate of poverty persists, Nigeria’s national security, stability, and unity will be jeopardized.

Mbachu demanded a stronger long-term strategy to address the nation’s rising poverty rate.

“My engagements have been focused more on the people, especially the poor who live below the poverty line. The level of poverty and inequality in Nigeria today threatens national security, stability and unity.

“Well-to-do individuals should be done with ‘dorime’ and 21 years old liquor. The cost of one bottle of exotic drink can end excruciating poverty in many families. This is the time to change approach,” he implored.

He emphasizes that creating more job opportunities for the underprivileged and implementing economic and institutional reforms for efficiency would elevate incomes.

He also called on young people to come out and assist the government in the fight against corruption by being active partners in monitoring projects, development and growth of their local communities.
