At least 1,500 employees of the Central Bank of Nigeria will resume work in the Lagos office on Friday, the bank revealed.
According to reports, the CBN is moving forward with its plans despite a wave of uproar and conflicting responses, and the impacted staff are anticipated to return to work by February 2.
The CBN stated in a memo to its employees that operating requirements and safety standards justified the action.
“This is to notify all staff members at the CBN Head Office that we have initiated a decongestion action plan designed to optimise the operational environment of the Bank.
“This initiative aims to ensure compliance with building safety standards and enhance the efficient utilisation of our office space,” the memo reads.
Departments including Banking Supervision, Other Financial Institutions Supervision, Consumer Protection, Payment System Management, and Financial Policy Regulations were designated for relocation by CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso.
Remembers that the aristocracy and several northern factions recently denounced the departmental relocation.
Senators from the North as well as young people expressed their disapproval, seeing the action as a deliberate attempt to harm the North.
