Journalists are not allowed to access the Grand Seasons Hotel, which is hosting the Labour Party’s National Convention in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The party’s crisis is not unrelated to the hotel’s reportedly high level of security.
Obiorah Ifoh, the party’s spokesperson, was ignored after numerous calls and texts asking him to let reporters with tags inside the venue were made.
Five people who were labeled as hoodlums were detained at the scene and brought to the police headquarters to be questioned.
It was said that the thugs were passing out divisive pamphlets that were critical of the party’s leadership.
They were charged with attempting to stir up trouble during the ongoing convention.
According to a party source, the criminal elements’ and their backers’ goal was to undermine the convention.
Recall that the Labour Party has been in disarray as a result of the party leadership struggle over the nomination of the national chairperson, a decision that many political observers find depressing.
