A number of well-known Northern Nigerians have distanced themselves from a recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal.
Recalls that Babachir Lawal asserted over the weekend that Nigeria fell apart following the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023.
Lawal emphasized that the strategy was implemented before to the formation of the governments and said that Tinubu’s declaration on the day of the inauguration, eliminating gasoline subsidies, sent the nation into economic ruin.
In response, a group of northerners operating under the banner of the Northern Congress for Change (NCC) declared that Lawal did not speak for the North and that his claims were fabricated.
Dr. Ben Amodu, the group’s convener, stated during a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja that Lawal’s problems stem only from his inability to back Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s nominee for president in the previous election.
The former SGF was further criticized by the group, which claimed that his remarks had no bearing on the nation and were irrelevant. It mentioned his suspected embezzlement of public funds during his tenure.
“We put it forward to everyone that David Babachir Lawal’s statements are not only misguided but also hypocritical. Still reeling from the grass-cutting scandal and his failed support for Peter Obi, he lacks the moral authority and temerity to criticize President Tinubu’s administration.
“Lawal’s involvement in the grass-cutting scandal and subsequent removal from office due to allegations of financial impropriety significantly tarnished his reputation. Lawal will always be Inconsequential and irrelevant in a discussion of prosperous government.
“Babachir David Lawal’s criticisms exemplify this phenomenon, in which vested interests and reactionary elements seek to impede the march of progress.
“Nevertheless, we must not permit the dissonant voices of the past to stifle the remarkable advancements of the present. As we gaze into the future, many promising prospects await Nigeria.
“The Northern Congress for Change implores Nigerians to disregard David Babachir Lawal’s unfounded and spurious assertions and concentrate on the tangible progress and significant strides being made under President Tinubu’s visionary leadership”, Amodu added.
