The House of Representatives has decided to combat the high cost of food and promote national food sufficiency by providing the Federal Government with N648 million for six months while also reducing their salary by 50%.
This came after the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, adopted an amendment to the motion’s petition stating that, in light of the hardships facing Nigeria, legislators should give up 50% of their N600,000 monthly salary in order to support their countrymen.
In response to a motion made by Ibrahim Isiaka of Ogun State, who urged supporters of the proposed statewide rallies to give up on the notion and start a conversation with the administration, Kalu revised his plea.
The Deputy Speaker stated that in order to lessen the suffering that Nigerians are going through, the federal government’s attempts to address the nation’s growing food prices will be aided by the pay decrease.
Along with passing this resolution, the parliamentarians pleaded on Nigerians to be more patient while President Ahmed Tinubu’s administration worked to address the problems and sufferings that the people of the country were facing.
The measure was approved and forwarded for compliance to the finance, budget, and humanitarian affairs committees.
