In an effort to further the demands of home workers, labor unions at Cross River State University of Science and Technology, or UNICROSS, have launched a three-day warning strike.
This is stated in a statement that Vincent Etta, the chairman of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and Mark Ayo, the chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), jointly signed.
According to the statement, university employees covered by the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT were initiating the strike.
“It’s on record that we have expressed our grievances through various correspondences to the authorities.
“The correspondences dated June 11, 2024, July 15, 2024, and August 7, 2024, gave the authorities 21 days, 14 days, and seven days notices respectively, to respond to worker’s demands.
“It is sad to report that no action was taken by the authorities on the issues raised in the correspondence.
“Having exhausted the procedure for trade dispute declaration, the unions have embarked on a three-day warning strike beginning from Monday, Aug. 19,” the statement read in parts.
The statement went on to say that the warning strike was meant to serve as a message about the suffering, neglect, and difficulties that university staff members are facing.
The strike was also cited as a result of the host community’s encroachment onto university property and the lack of capital projects.
According to the statement, the unions should be concerned about the welfare of their members and the overall development of the university since they are important players in its progress.
