To improve public health, the Abia State government has launched integrated water, sanitation, and hygiene measures.

At Government House Umuahia on Monday, Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities Ikechuckwu disclosed this information while discussing the conclusions of this week’s Executive Council Meeting, which was chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

According to him, the project was designed as a coordinated, three-phase program that will retrofit existing boreholes with solar-powered devices, especially in rural regions, to guarantee a steady supply of water independent of the electrical grid.

Monday clarified that extensive water facility examination and treatment would be carried out to guarantee safe drinking water for the Abia population, especially those living in the rural areas. Monday recognized the importance of high-quality water in boosting public health standards.

“We evaluated every water facility in the state when we took office, and we discovered that not a single one of the 58 core water facilities was producing even a single liter of water.”

The state “aims to achieve zero open defecation and would construct modern solar-powered public sanitation facilities, including washrooms and toilets across the three senatorial zones,” according to the Power and Public Utilities Commissioner, who also stated that steps are being taken to improve sanitation and hygiene across the state.

Governor Alex Otti has approved the renovation of Amachara General Hospital and Abia State Specialist in Umuahia, according to Commissioner for Information and Culture Okey Kanu. The upgrades will allow the hospitals to provide a wider range of medical services, including internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, surgery, brain and spine surgeries, among others.

In a separate speech, the recently appointed Abia State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, stated that the Governor has also approved funding for the recruitment of top-tier medical professionals in order to offer the public the highest caliber of healthcare services.
