In commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Charity, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the wife of the Governor of Abia State, has extended her compassion to indigent patients and struggling traders. As part of her charitable efforts, she settled the hospital bills of several patients at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, and provided financial support to over 50 traders at Orie-Ugba market in Umuahia.
World Charity Day, celebrated annually on September 5, serves as a global reminder of the power of charity and the impact of selfless giving. The theme for the 2024 celebration centers on fostering compassion and uplifting communities through meaningful acts of kindness.
During the presentation of proof of payment to the management of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Mrs. Otti emphasized that her gesture aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of the people. She reassured the public that such interventions would not be a one-time occurrence, as she plans to make this a continuous exercise, encouraging others to join in supporting the less privileged, particularly during these challenging economic times.
Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti further revealed that her office quietly settles the hospital bills of many Abians on a daily basis, often without involving the press. She noted that her team has covered the costs of numerous surgeries for patients who were unable to afford the procedures, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare access for all citizens.
Mrs. Otti also expressed her gratitude to the management and staff of FMC for their unwavering dedication to saving lives and urged them to continue their noble service.
In a separate event at Orie-Ugba market, where over fifty traders received cash grants to boost their businesses, Mrs. Otti announced plans to revamp the market, creating a more conducive environment for traders.
The wife of the Governor also disclosed that this initiative is part of her ongoing efforts to ensure that no woman is left out in the state’s poverty alleviation programs. She highlighted that several women have already benefitted from various Abia State Government interventions, and since many of these market women may not have direct access to her, she decided to visit them personally and offer support.
Additionally, Mrs. Otti extended her philanthropic outreach to Obikabia and Ahiabaubi Modern Daily Markets in Isiala Ngwa North, where over 100 petty traders benefitted from her cash support.
The Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Blessing Ngozi Felix, shed more light on the hospital intervention, noting that some beneficiaries had been discharged but were unable to pay their medical bills until the First Lady’s timely intervention.
