On Tuesday, Julius Abure was reinstated as the national chairman of the Labour Party, LP by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The court ruled that the 2024 Labour Party national convention, which took place in Nnewi and resulted in Abure’s reelection, was legitimate because it complied with all established rules in Nigeria.
This was said in a statement made public by Obiora Ifoh, the party’s national publicity secretary, on Tuesday.
The statement claims that during the verdict delivery, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, to provide the Labour Party’s National Working Committee—led by Abure—proper recognition and all privileges.
According to reports, INEC declared that Abure was not recognized as the Labour Party’s National Chairman.
The Commission contended that the LP leadership under Abure was illegitimate, claiming that the National Convention in March 2024, which reconfirmed Abure as chairman, had contravened both the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution.
