The Abia State Government has authorized a health insurance program and contributed N500 million in counterpart money, allowing state civil servants to access high-quality medical care from providers.
While briefing reporters on the results of this week’s executive council meeting, which was chaired by Governor Alex Otti, State Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu revealed this on Monday night.
All civil servants are covered by the insurance plan, according to Kanu, who also pointed out that although they are expected to contribute 5% of their base wage, Governor Otti has authorized a 2.5% payment for the first three months.
The commissioner reported that the Abia State Specialist Hospital has regained its accreditation status from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for the training of medical interns, and that the state government has approved the extensive renovation and upgrade of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba.
He claims that the institution’s training quota was raised from 24 to 36 as a result of accreditation.
Additionally, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya, the Commissioner for Health, stated that when the contribution was started, Abia State Government employees will begin using the services in three months.
In addition to their wives, government employees are entitled to four dependents, according to Ogbonnaya, who also mentioned that plans are in place to include those in the unorganized sector in the program.
