On Thursday, December 19, members of the House of Representatives donated N704.9 million from their wages to help the country’s most disadvantaged Nigerians.
During a plenary session, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas unveiled this effort.
“If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704, 907,578.82”, he said.
The Speaker stated that the money, which the MPs had amassed over the previous five months, would be given to Nigerians who are in need.
He underlined that the MPs’ choice to contribute half of their wages was a reaction to the extreme poverty and hardships that the people were experiencing.
Abbas added that President Bola Tinubu will get the money raised in order to assist reduce poverty in Nigeria.
“On the 31st of December, I will lead a delegation of leadership to hand over the money to the President for the exclusive use of the vulnerable Nigerians who really need it.
“The contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians,” Abbas added.
