In Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the need of international cooperation in tackling sustainable development.
According to him, Nigeria is open to collaborating with other countries to create a world that is sustainable, just, and resilient for everybody.
On the second day of the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which has as its topic “From Climate Imperatives into Economic Prosperity: Bridging Africa with the Global Energy Future,” the president made his clarion call.
Tinubu asserts that no one country can achieve sustainability on its own and that cooperation, knowledge exchange, and assistance from one another are necessary due to global interconnection.
“The fight against climate change is not merely an environmental necessity but a global economic opportunity to reshape the trajectory of our continent and the global energy landscape.
“As leaders, stakeholders and citizens of our planet, we stand at a critical juncture in human history. To succeed, we must innovate, collaborate and act decisively as one global community,” he noted.
Tinubu told the audience that his administration is committed to cutting carbon emissions and that the Nigerian government has implemented practical programs that meet international standards while taking Nigeria’s political and economic aspirations into consideration.
“We have embraced a vision of sustainability that aligns with global aspirations while addressing local realities. Our efforts are anchored on three pillars: Energy Transition, Climate Resilience, and Sustainable Development. My administration recognises the importance of reducing carbon emissions and a just transition to clean and renewable energy, promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth.
“Our energy transition plans, like many nations, are aimed at diversifying energy sources and reducing dependency on fossil fuels, prioritising the transition to cleaner energy sources as a cornerstone of our national development strategy.”
The President went on to say that Nigeria is utilizing the potential of solid minerals to aid in the transition to green energy and building infrastructure for the widespread use of electric vehicles and compressed natural gas.
In order to improve food security and reduce its detrimental environmental effects, Tinubu stated in his presentation at the summit that his nation is also putting climate-smart agriculture strategies into reality.
Among these, he mentioned the National Clean Cooking Policy, which aims to advance clean energy, health and environmental advantages, and socioeconomic development in Africa.
The President claims that the government is collaborating with local communities to put solutions into place that would lessen the negative effects of the nation’s environmental problems, which include pollution, deforestation, coastline erosion, flooding, and desertification.
He claimed that millions of people’s livelihoods are in danger because of these issues.
In order to address these issues and embrace innovation and technology, he called on partner nations to work together in mobilizing resources.
“To promote a Green Economy in Africa, we must focus on integrating sustainable practices in all sectors of our economy. These investments are capital intensive and require international support from partner countries, including multinational organisations, development partners and individuals who share our vision of a sustainable, prosperous and equitable future”, he said
According to the President, “Nigeria became the first country in Africa to initiate funding of green projects through Sovereign Green Bond proceeds, the third issuance of which is in progress. We urge investors to partner with us in this regard. Our administration remains committed to providing an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in Nigeria.
“By partnering with global leaders and harnessing the power of technology, we are finding new and innovative ways to address our environmental challenges. We have arable agricultural lands for advanced technological farming, including a bright future for Artificial Intelligence.”
He praised His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates, for inviting him and foreseeing the occasion.
The purpose of the event was to bring world leaders together to share ideas and viewpoints on how to work together to overcome the contemporary global concerns.
