On Wednesday, Nigeria’s national grid collapsed for the second time this year, throwing parts of the country into darkness.
Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org) indicates that the breakdown happened on Wednesday at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, or TCN, has not yet revealed the reason for this grid disruption.
According to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), the grid outage occurred on Wednesday at approximately 11:30 a.m.
“We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today (Wednesday), causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised,” AEDC said in a statement on X on Wednesday.
Similarly, a popular Nigeria National Grid account on X wrote on Wednesday, “There was a “GRID DISTURBANCE” before noon today (Wednesday). Parts of the country experienced an outage”.
When our correspondent contacted TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah to inquire on the development, she stated that she was en route and would get back to us.
The January 11, 2025, grid disruption is followed by this one.
This episode is part of a pattern of grid instability; in 2024, there were roughly 12 consecutive collapses.
