Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB, the former military head of state, simply admitted his guilt without pleading with Nigerians for forgiveness, according to Adewale Giwa, senior pastor of The Second Coming of Christ Ministry, who made this claim on Friday.
Babangida’s confession, according to Pastor Giwa, is delayed because MKO Abiola is no longer able to regain his mandate.
Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was canceled by Babangida, the military head of state at the time.
Babangida acknowledged that MKO Abiola won the 1993 presidential election, which was free, fair, and legitimate, at the book launch for his biography, A Journey in Service.
However, he pointed out that if Abiola had declared himself the election winner, he would have been overthrown by forces posing as friends.
Some of the intrigues surrounding the 1993 annulled presidential election were also revealed by the previous military head of state.
But according to Pastor Giwa, Babangida had every chance to name Abiola president but never did, and the former military leader has doubts.
Speaking in Akure, Ondo State, at a current affairs show on Adaba FM, the pastor stated:
”IBB only confessed his sin, but he never asked Nigerians for forgiveness. It’s unfortunate that most of our political leaders don’t think about the legacies they leave behind.
“As it is, they only think about how to pursue or satisfy their interests, forgetting that you brought nothing to this world and will leave with nothing. The Lord will ask you on Judgment Day to produce a record of your stewardship.
“God hates injustice and oppression. The evil and atrocities you commit will definitely speak after you have departed this world. History will judge everyone accordingly, and a nation that forgets its past has no future. If I were one of the invited guests, I would have vacated the venue immediately after the statement was made.
“The confession of IBB is coming late. I wonder what could have kept him so long before publicly admitting that MKO actually won the 1993 election—after 31 years.
“If IBB has now admitted that MKO won the 1993 election, how does he address the circumstances that led to Abiola’s death? We should not forget that MKO was arrested, jailed, and killed while trying to reclaim his mandate. His wife was also killed in the process.
“In fact, those behind the 1993 annulment have many questions to answer. Why should you kill just to hold on to power? Why? Those who kill by the sword will definitely die by the sword.
“IBB had every opportunity and the power to declare the late MKO the winner of the 1993 election, but he didn’t do so.
“Why now? Why the confession? What for? MKO is dead and cannot rise up to get his mandate back.”
