…Government Moves to Enforce Cyber Security and Data Protection Laws

The Abia State Government has issued a stern warning against the spread of false information, declaring its readiness to prosecute individuals or groups found guilty of violating the Cyber Security Act and Data Protection Act.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made this announcement while addressing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.

Prince Kanu emphasized that the present administration would no longer tolerate the deliberate spread of misinformation, particularly when disguised as political opposition. He stressed that misleading the public with falsehoods is not only irresponsible but also dangerous to the peace and stability of the state.

“This is to inform those who peddle falsehood all in the name of opposition that time has come for them to desist from such unwholesome acts or be ready to face the full wrath of the law,” Prince Kanu warned.

While reaffirming the state government’s commitment to transparency, Prince Kanu urged citizens to verify information before sharing it on social media or other platforms. He noted that the reckless dissemination of fake news has the potential to cause public disorder and incite unnecessary panic.

“Such people need to be reminded of the Cyber Laws in our legal system, Cyber Security Act, the Data Protection Act all part of our legal system.

“While this Government has nothing to hide, we believe that the purveyors of falsehood are infringing on the rights of others.

“The people that engage in acts of misinformation should understand that it has the capacity to cause mischief and chaos among the public.

“It is important for such people to note that this State Government reserves the right to prosecute them if they run foul of the law,” Prince Kanu stated.

The Commissioner further reminded the public that the Cyber Security Act and Data Protection Act are legally binding in Nigeria. He stressed that spreading falsehood is not a harmless act but a serious offense that violates the rights of others and threatens public order.

The Abia State Government has, therefore, put potential violators on notice, making it clear that anyone found guilty of cyber-related offenses will face the full weight of the law.

With this strong stance, the Otti-led administration is reaffirming its commitment to accountability, responsible governance, and a well-informed society. Citizens are encouraged to embrace ethical communication practices and contribute to a stable and progressive Abia State.
