The government of Cross River State has been urged by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, or NUJ, to reinstate sanitary inspectors in order to warn residents against leaving trash in their communities.
At the conclusion of its congress, which was held at the state secretariat in Calabar, a communiqué was issued on Friday that included this call.
Although they were pleased with the state government’s attempts to make Calabar cleaner, they denounced the continuous trash disposal on the city’s main thoroughfares.
For example, they suggested that such uncontrolled rubbish disposal defaces the state capital’s attractiveness.
“With the rainy season approaching, we recommend that the Calabar Urban Development Agency, CUDA, increase public awareness campaigns to dissuade people from unrestricted dumping of waste.
“We call on the authorities to reintroduce sanitary inspectors to address these issues.”
The increase in criminal activity in some areas of Calabar, the state capital, was another issue raised by NUJ.
As a result, they demanded more security monitoring in certain areas.
