The Labour Party, or LP, has made a commitment to never let “reactionary forces” take control of the organization.
Obiora Ifoh, the LP spokesperson, said this while ruling out the idea of the party merging.
Ifoh stated that LP is open to partnering for upcoming elections in response to the Nigeria Labour Congress’s (NLC) request to rebrand in anticipation of a potential merger or coalition.
“Take immediate steps, which may include rebranding, merger, or forming coalitions to defend the interests of NLC and Nigerian workers in the party with a view to reclaiming the party and returning it to its original ideological roots,” the congress instructed the national administrative council (NAC) in a communique released following its meeting.
“The congress will not allow the Labour Party to be hijacked by reactionary forces who do not represent the aspirations of the working people and broader Nigerian people.
“The NLC remains committed to ensuring that the party remains a true vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and the oppressed masses.”
Ifoh said the LP “remains open to collaborations aimed at strengthening its position ahead of future elections”.
