Port Harcourt, March 5, 2025 – The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially invited the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), along with all Commissioners of the Commission, to appear before the House on Friday, March 7, 2025, to answer questions regarding their conduct in office.

The invitation follows deliberations at the 131st Legislative Sitting of the Second Session of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, where lawmakers discussed a motion concerning the RSIEC Chairman’s actions, particularly in relation to the Supreme Court judgment in Suit No. SC/CV/1105/2024. The court had nullified the October 5, 2024, Local Government elections, citing that they were conducted in defiance of a subsisting High Court order.

The House, invoking its oversight and investigative powers under Section 128 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), has directed the RSIEC Chairman and his Commissioners to provide explanations regarding their role in the now-nullified elections.

The House also demands that they present all relevant financial documents justifying any funds spent by the Commission from January 1, 2024, to date, without an appropriation law.

The session is scheduled to take place at 10:00 AM at the Hallowed Chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters, Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Failure to honor the invitation, the House warns, may lead to the issuance of a warrant of arrest or the invocation of the Assembly’s constitutional powers under Section 129.

The summons was officially communicated by Dr. Emeka Amadi, Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
