In order to protect Nigeria from “area boys,” Bashir El-Rufai, the son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has asked Nigerians to join the Social Democratic Party, or SDP.
In a mysterious post on X on Friday, Bashir made this claim, perhaps alluding to the appointees of President Bola Tinubu, especially those from Lagos State.
“Join in saving this country from area boys,” he wrote.
remembers that El-Rufai, Bashir’s father, recently joined the SDP after leaving the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC.
Prior to his resignation, the former governor of Kaduna had been more critical of Tinubu’s APC-led administration.
He also cited a widening discrepancy between his personal beliefs and the party’s current direction as justification for his departure.
El-Rufai had previously attacked Tinubu for exclusively putting his “boys” from Lagos in positions of authority.
“The president’s appointments are not being made because the appointees are Yoruba, but because they are his own boys, and most of the appointments do not even reasonably cover the South-West,” El-Rufai said.
