Mr. Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has urged Labour Party members in the national assembly to resist the dismissal of Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State.
In a press release that he signed and shared on his verified Facebook page, Obi stated that although he has long avoided discussing the lawmakers because he wants them to focus on their work, it is now appropriate that he do so in light of Fubara’s recent dismissal.
He said: “I urge you to stand as true defenders of justice. Do not participate in or support any action, decision, or vote that compromises the integrity of our democracy, undermines the interests of the people of Rivers State, or contradicts our core values of fairness, equity, and transparency.
To respect your independence and give you the opportunity to concentrate on easing the suffering of the Nigerian people, I have abstained from meddling in your legislative matters ever since you were sworn in as distinguished and honorable members of the National Assembly.
But after 26 years of a democratic process that has deteriorated due to enormous electoral cheating, contempt for educational prerequisites for electoral offices, and now the unlawful removal of elected officeholders, I feel compelled to address you at this crucial juncture. The consequences of these illegitimate acts on our democracy and popular will are profound.
“We must not allow ourselves to become instruments of injustice or contribute to the betrayal of the people’s mandate. At this moment, we must prioritize what is right over what is wrong or convenient, remaining steadfast in defending the well-being of the people of Rivers State.
“Together, let us stand firm in our resolve — because a new Nigeria is possible!” Obi said.
