Asiwaju Moshood Shittu, a well-known NNPP chieftain, has advised Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s national leader, not to rush into any political alliances or mergers before the general elections in 2027.
Shittu, a former director-general (North) of the Kwankwaso Presidential Campaign Council, cautioned media in Abuja over the weekend that any hasty merger lacking a defined objective or a strong presidential candidate could be a “marriage of inconvenience.”
He claimed that it produced a worse leadership outcome, drawing a comparison to the 2014 merger that culminated in President Goodluck Jonathan’s removal.
Kwankwaso was instructed by Shittu to carefully consider such coalitions, raising concerns about the proposed candidate’s trustworthiness as well as the merger’s goals and governance structure.
He underlined that a lack of intellectual unity and vision is the main reason why the majority of opposition coalitions in Nigeria fall apart.
Shittu urged Kwankwaso to put the needs of the Nigerian people ahead of political considerations, cautioning that any poor choice would be severely judged by history.
He came to the conclusion that Nigeria’s government “cannot afford another gamble.”
