Sule Lamido, a leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and a former governor of Jigawa State, has blamed Nigeria’s persistent problems on its people.
Lamido responded to recent calls for the creation of a new political party to run against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections while speaking at his Bamaina home on Sunday at a ceremony that broke the Ramadan fast.
He claimed that without considering the repercussions, Nigerians chose to remove the People’s Democratic Party, or PDP, from office and install the APC.
“As I have been saying, Nigerians don’t know much about Tinubu. He is an expert in deceit and selfishness,” Lamido said.
His remarks came after Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, called for opposition leaders to band together under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in order to save Nigeria from the current government.
However, Lamido rejected the notion, claiming that President Tinubu cannot be overthrown by feelings and rage alone.
“You cannot challenge Tinubu with rage, greed, hate, envy, or wickedness. He is a master of all that,” Lamido said. “Only the ideals of truth and nationalism can confront him effectively.”
“There is no shame in reuniting with a political family that had successfully governed the country between 1999 and 2015,” he said, urging lawmakers who had previously been members of the PDP to rejoin the party.
“When a nation faces difficulties, its leaders must not let personal grievances affect their judgment,” he added.
Lamido further criticized the current administration, asserting that Nigeria is in a worse state now than it was under the PDP.
“We need to reflect, be honest with ourselves, and ask: Are we better off now than we were before this government took over? The answer is no,” he stated.
He asserts that the only party capable of regaining power and offering Nigerians efficient governance is a powerful and cohesive PDP.
In order to guarantee success in the upcoming election, he urged every PDP member since 1999 to rejoin the party.
