On Thursday, the House of Representatives overturned its ruling on the second reading of a bill that aimed to deprive immunity to the governors, deputy governors, and vice president.

Julius Ihonvbere, the House’s Majority Leader, introduced a motion that caused the lower legislative chamber to reverse course.

Solomon Bob, a Rivers State senator for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is the bill’s sponsor. On Wednesday, the bill passed second reading.

The law, according to Bob, aims to “promote accountability in public office” by taking away the immunity that governors, their deputies, and the vice president now have.

The Constitution’s Section 308 declares that “the president, vice-president, governor, and deputy governor, during the period he/she is holding the office, shall not be subjected to civil or criminal proceedings.

“The occupants of the office shall not also be arrested or imprisoned and no process of any court requiring or compelling their appearance.”

According to Bob, the action is intended to eliminate impunity, reduce immunity, prevent corruption, and improve accountability in public office.

Additionally, the green chamber reversed its ruling on the death penalty repeal bill.

Additionally, during Wednesday’s plenary, the bill passed second reading.
