Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has declared that the era of darkness is over in Abia, as he unveiled plans to establish an Independent Power Project (IPP) at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu. The project, he revealed, will generate no less than 10 megawatts of electricity to serve both the university and the surrounding Uturu community.
The Governor made this known during a grand civic reception held in his honour at Isuikwuato High School, where he also received the Member Representing Isuikwuato State Constituency, Hon. Lucky Nwaeke Johnson, Mrs. Onyinye Rufus Obi, and others into the Labour Party.
“The days of darkness are over. Once light comes, darkness flees. This project won’t just serve the University—it will power the entire Uturu community,” Governor Otti said.
He reiterated that the state’s transformation will not stop at power, but will also extend to roads and other critical sectors. He cited the recent signing of the Abia State Electricity Law, which empowers the state to set up renewable and integrated power systems without federal approval.
“Very soon, the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency will be inaugurated. One of our sons, a proven expert who served in Canada, has agreed to return home and lead this effort,” the Governor announced.
Highlighting road infrastructure, Otti promised that the Ezima Road, among others, would be flagged off for construction soon. He noted the difficulty of rebuilding a state that had suffered decades of decay but assured the people that tangible progress was being made.
“When we came in, we didn’t start from zero; we started from the negative. But we are rebuilding Abia and laying solid foundations,” he said.
Barr. Ken Ahia (SAN), leader of the Labour Party stakeholders in Isuikwuato, commended Governor Otti’s visible impact in the area and pledged unwavering support for his re-election in 2027.
Also speaking, Hon. Johnson described Governor Otti as a “leader with genuine passion for transformation,” declaring that Isuikwuato is now a stronghold of the Labour Party. He urged those considering contesting against the party to “save their money.”
Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, the Mayor of Isuikwuato LGA, assured the Governor of continued support and said history would remember him kindly.
“Your legacy is being written already. Even after eight years, posterity will remember your impact,” he stated.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Ikechukwu Uwanna, hailed Governor Otti’s administration for the consistent payment of salaries and pensions, calling him a leader with a heart of gold.
Also speaking, the Leader of the Isuikwuato Legislative Council, Hon. Felix Onwuka, praised the Governor’s efforts and pledged that the people of Isuikwuato would stand firmly behind him for a second term.
