The Liberal Progressive and Patriotic Members Congress (LPPMC) has commended the Supreme Court of Nigeria for what it described as a landmark ruling that reinforces the rule of law and democratic integrity amid the ongoing leadership dispute within the Labour Party.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Dr Kingsley Okundaye, the group hailed the court’s decision nullifying the conventions conducted by the Julius Abure-led faction, describing it as “a victory for democracy and a stern rebuke of political impunity.”
“We stand unequivocally in solidarity with the Sen. Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee, the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission, and members of the former National Transition Committee, whose tireless efforts to restore integrity, transparency, and accountability to the Labour Party have been vindicated by the judiciary,” Okundaye stated.
The LPPMC also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for its clarification on May 8, 2025, debunking media reports that falsely claimed recognition of unauthorized party leaders. The group called on INEC to uphold constitutional principles and promptly recognize the Usman-led committee as the legitimate leadership in line with the Supreme Court judgment.
Describing recent actions by the defunct Abure-led National Working Committee as “a dead lion’s growl,” the LPPMC criticized attempts to suspend elected officials, including Governor Alex Otti and Senators Ireti Kingibe and Darlington Nwokocha, as baseless and illegitimate.
Reiterating its commitment to democratic ideals, the LPPMC urged INEC and all stakeholders to support the ongoing audit of the Labour Party’s finances and ensure that corrupt practices are exposed. “Democracy is not a spectator sport. It demands vigilance, courage, and collective action,” Okundaye added.
