PUO Reports — A prosecution witness in the ongoing terrorism trial of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, on Wednesday presented a certified true copy (CTC) of the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak, the late political adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The witness, identified as BBB, is the second prosecution witness (PW2) in the case and testified before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The document was tendered during the continuation of proceedings led by the Federal Government’s lead counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.
Although the session had initially been scheduled for the cross-examination of PW2, Chief Awomolo requested the court’s permission to pose an additional question to the witness.
“We ask for permission to ask a question, my Lord,” Awomolo stated.
The application was not opposed by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, who is representing the IPOB leader. Justice Omotosho granted the request, allowing the prosecution to proceed.
Chief Awomolo questioned the witness on prior testimony which alleged that a radio broadcast made by Nnamdi Kanu included a call for a sit-at-home order, which the prosecution links to the eventual killing of Ahmed Gulak.
The witness affirmed the claim and confirmed that he had been involved in investigations relating to Gulak’s assassination.
He also informed the court that he had brought with him a death certificate issued by the Nigeria Police in Owerri, Imo State, dated July 18, 2021. The document, he said, was a certified true copy of the official medical report confirming Gulak’s death.
The document was presented to the defence, with Chief Agabi raising no objections to its admissibility. Justice Omotosho subsequently admitted the document into evidence and marked it as Exhibit PWJ.
Chief Awomolo further sought the court’s permission for the witness to read the content of the certificate aloud in the courtroom. The request was granted.
Reading from the document, BBB stated that the report originated from the Nigeria Police in Owerri and officially confirmed that Ahmed Gulak was fatally shot in 2021 by suspected IPOB members.
Following this testimony, Chief Agabi commenced the cross-examination of the witness.
PUO Reports notes that the assassination of Gulak, a former Special Adviser on Political Affairs and prominent northern political figure, remains one of the most controversial killings linked to separatist tensions in the Southeast. The Federal Government has continued to hold the IPOB leadership accountable for inciting actions that allegedly resulted in the incident.
The trial of Nnamdi Kanu has drawn significant domestic and international attention, with ongoing debates surrounding due process, separatist agitation, and the broader implications for Nigeria’s unity.
PUO Reports will continue to monitor proceedings and provide verified updates as the case unfolds in the coming weeks.
