Abuja, May 27, 2025 — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, held its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where it reviewed the state of the nation and internal party affairs. A communique issued at the end of the meeting strongly criticized the APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and affirmed PDP’s commitment to rescuing the country from what it described as “increasing hardship and authoritarian tendencies.”

In a ten-point resolution presented by the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the NEC expressed deep concern over what it called the “melancholic” condition of the country, attributing the deteriorating state of security, economy, and governance to what it termed the “exploitative, insensitive, and anti-people” policies of the APC administration.

Key Highlights of the Communique:

  1. Condemnation of National Insecurity:
The NEC decried the worsening insecurity across the country, including killings, banditry, and terrorism, blaming the Tinubu administration for “neglecting its constitutional duty” to protect Nigerians.
  2. Economic Hardship:
The party criticized the administration’s policies, including fuel price hikes, increased electricity tariffs, and multiple taxation, saying they have caused business collapse, mass unemployment, and a general state of poverty.
  3. Allegations of Corruption:
The PDP accused the Federal Government of “massive treasury looting,” policy inconsistency, and “budget padding,” all of which it said have weakened infrastructure and discouraged investment.
  4. Resistance to One-Party Rule:
The NEC rejected what it called a “sinister plot” by the APC to “annihilate opposition” and turn Nigeria into a one-party state, describing the APC’s actions as a response to its fear of defeat in the 2027 elections.
  5. Democratic Values and Party Unity:
Despite internal and external challenges, the NEC affirmed PDP’s commitment to democracy, rule of law, and multi-party participation, highlighting that the successful conduct of the 99th NEC meeting proves the party’s resilience and unity.
  6. National Convention Plans:
NEC approved the conduct of the PDP National Convention from Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025. It ratified the composition of the National Convention Committee, chaired by Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri, with Gov. Ademola Adeleke as Vice Chairman and Gov. Peter Mbah as Secretary.
  7. Zoning Committee Formation:
The party also approved the formation of the Zoning Committee ahead of the convention, chaired by Gov. Douye Diri, with Gov. Dauda Lawal as Vice Chairman and Gov. Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary.
  8. National Secretary Dispute:
NEC acknowledged receipt of the resolution from the South-East Zonal Executive regarding the National Secretary position and agreed to deliberate on it at the next NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025.
  9. Reassurance to Nigerians:
Concluding the communique, the NEC reassured citizens of PDP’s unwavering commitment to lead the charge in “rescuing the nation from the vicious grip of the APC.”

The communique marks a strong show of intent by Nigeria’s main opposition party, as it seeks to consolidate internal unity and prepare for future electoral battles.
