ABSU Law Faculty Charges Newly Admitted Students on Dress Code, Proper Conduc
The Faculty of Law, Abia State University (ABSU), Umuahia campus, held its induction and orientation programme for newly admitted 100-level and Direct Entry students on Thursday, May 29, 2025. The annual event is designed to formally welcome new students while educating them on the rules, regulations, and expectations of both the University and the Faculty of Law.
The programme was organized by the faculty under the leadership of the Dean, Professor Collins Chijioke, and coordinated by the Faculty’s Students’ Legal Adviser, Dr. Uche Nwosu.
In his keynote address, Prof. Chijioke emphasized the importance of proper conduct, discipline, and adherence to the prescribed dress code, which reflects the standards of the legal profession. He also strongly warned students against cultism and any form of violence, urging them to uphold the dignity of the legal field.
The orientation featured a series of impactful lectures from distinguished faculty members:
• Dr. P.C. Ugochukwu sensitized students on “The Faculty of Law and Course Structure”.
• Dr. Chizoba Okpara, Head of the Department of Jurisprudence, International and Public Law, lectured on “Academic Expectations and the Pursuit of Excellence.”
• Prof. M.O. Unegbu spoke on “Academic Advising and Effective Use of the Law Library.”
• Prof. Hagler Okorie, Head of the Department of Private and Property Law, addressed “Research and Career Pathways in Law.”
A highlight of the event was the presence of the former Chief Judge of Abia State, Honourable Justice O.E. Ogwe, who inspired the students with a heartfelt message on the importance of mentorship, dedication, and seriousness in legal education as keys to long-term success.
The orientation also enjoyed full participation from faculty staff and active involvement from the student leadership, led by Saturday Promise Abertus, President of the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), ABSU Chapter.
The event served not just as a welcome, but as a foundational guide for the students’ journey into the legal profession, ensuring they are informed, inspired, and aligned with the values of justice, professionalism, and academic excellence.
