The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to shut down Abuja in response to the protracted strike by area council workers.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), FCT NLC Chairman Dr. Stephen Knabayi said the union would mobilize its members to take over the streets immediately after President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing project inaugurations conclude on July 3.
The planned shutdown aims to draw attention to the strike, which has severely disrupted essential services in the FCT, including the closure of all primary health care centres and the prolonged absence of teachers and pupils from public primary schools.
Knabayi emphasized that the strike had dragged on for too long and lamented the lack of action from the FCT administration, particularly from Minister Nyesom Wike.
“We are waiting for it to end and we will come together to step up our planned action,” he said.
This warning follows a protest by primary school pupils at the FCT Minister’s residence, where they called for urgent intervention to resolve the impasse and allow them to return to school.
