The Government of Saint Lucia has conferred one of its highest national honours, the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL), on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A statement posted on the official X account of the Office of the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia confirmed that the Governor General, acting on the advice of the Government, approved the conferment in recognition of President Tinubu’s outstanding leadership on the African continent. The honour also acknowledges his commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation and his efforts to rekindle cultural, historical, and diplomatic ties with the Caribbean.
President Tinubu is currently on a historic state visit to Saint Lucia, part of a wider diplomatic tour of the Caribbean and South America. His visit marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s foreign policy, as he becomes one of the few African leaders to receive the prestigious title.
The Government of Saint Lucia noted that the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia is typically reserved for individuals who have rendered distinguished service of national or international importance to the island nation.
The conferment aligns with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to reposition the country as a central player in global diplomacy and cultural engagement. Under this policy, Nigeria has intensified efforts to expand its diplomatic presence and rebuild strategic relationships, particularly with countries in the Caribbean and South America.
Established in 1985, the Order of Saint Lucia represents the highest system of national honours in the country. The rank of Knight Commander is the second-highest grade within the order, subordinate only to the Grand Cross.
